Mise-en-Seen-It - Cabin in the Woods

I like to think that I started my Friday the 13th off right by attending a midnight showing of Cabin in the Woods. All I can say is, Whedon did it again.

Without giving too much away and attempting to avoid all spoilers, I'm going to give my short review of what made it so great.

First off, Cabin in the Woods created justification for every horror movie ever created while simultaneously paying homage to all of them. Whedon takes the classic 'cabin in the woods' scenario and brings a twist that has never been done before, at least not that I have seen.

The cast includes many familiar faces from the Whedon-verse. Each of the characters in the story are spot on. The characters are all full formed and well thought out, but they also fall into the classic horror movie stereo types, with good reason too. The story is rightfully predictable for anyone who knows the traditional flow of a horror story, and that becomes a theme throughout the movie. Most of all, there are bloody twists and gory turns that I never saw coming.

Finally, Whedon manages to pack in more horror into this one movie than any movie I have ever seen. Whatever you fear, there is a good chance you will see it in Cabin in the Woods. In this way, Whedon manages to pay tribute to every classic horror movie we love.

Simply put, this is a must see for any horror movie fan or fan of Joss Whedon.
